Having just been voted the 7th most expensive city on earth in which to live, Sydney doesn’t immediately stand out as somewhere to visit as a backpacker on a budget. Real estate is expensive, drinks are expensive and groceries are through the roof. The problem is, however, that Sydney is also one of the most beautiful, vibrant and enjoyable cities as well, so even though it hurts the back pocket, scores of backpackers arrive each year to try their luck in the big city and experience life down under. If you’re contemplating a trip to Sydney but are worried about the amount of cash you’re going to have to part with, never fear—we’ve put together a guide to doing Sydney on the cheap, from how to get the best bang for your buck at Sydney hostels, to which activities are free or cheap. Pack your bags and get ready, because it is possible to enjoy the harbour city without breaking the bank!
Accommodation
Sydney hostels range in price but usually hover between $25-$35 per night in a dorm room. This price can however be lowered if you’re willing to either work in the hostel cleaning or in reception, or are thinking of staying long term and thus paying the slightly lower weekly or monthly rates. If you’re thinking of getting an apartment with friends for a few months, think about sharing a room with a friend (and therefore splitting the rent) or renting in a guesthouse where there are some shared facilities. This way you don’t have to outlay as big a bond, and the rent won’t be crippling.
Food
There’s no denying it, groceries in Sydney seem to be more expensive than anywhere else in Australia. You can avoid paying the big bucks, but it’s going to mean making a commitment to shopping around. Aldi Supermarkets are a great place to grab staples at reduced prices, and there are more of these Swedish bargain basements popping up all the time. For fresh fruit try the smaller green grocers or markets instead of the major supermarkets—you’ll find you save bucket loads of cash. As for eating out, there are several really cheap (but good) places to eat in the city, but again, you need to search for them. Chinatown is a great location because there is so much competition that it drives prices down. Alternatively, out west is wonderful for Lebanese, Asian and Indian cuisine at cut prices.
Activities
Remember when your mother used to tell you that you don’t need to spend money to have fun? She was right. Luckily, Sydney has a range of beaches, parks, bushwalks and markets to cruise around on the weekends, and it’s possible to have a day full of entertainment without spending a penny.
Sydney may be one of the most expensive cities on the planet, but even a short stay in the beautiful harbour city will show you that it’s worth it. By paying a little more attention to how and where you spend, you can stretch your dollar further, so what are you waiting for? Pack your bags, grab some travel insurance and go!
